Description

UV masterbatches are specialized additives used in plastics to protect them from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This radiation can cause discoloration, brittleness, degradation, and ultimately, failure of the plastic product. UV masterbatches contain UV absorbers and/or hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) to mitigate these effects.

  • UV Absorber Masterbatches
    • Function
These masterbatches work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into harmless thermal energy. They act like a sunscreen for plastics, preventing the UV light from reaching and damaging the polymer chains.
  • Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HALS) Masterbatches
    • Function
HALS work through a cyclical mechanism, scavenging free radicals that are generated when UV radiation initiates polymer degradation. They essentially “clean up” the damage caused by UV light, preventing further chain reactions that lead to polymer breakdown. They do not absorb UV light directly.
