Description
Hand tool vices (or simply vices) are clamping devices used to hold a workpiece firmly in place so that it can be worked on with hand tools. They provide a stable and secure grip, preventing the workpiece from moving, slipping, or vibrating while you are filing, sawing, drilling, chiseling, or performing other manual operations.
The most common types of vices used with hand tools:
- Bench Vices
These are the most common and robust type. They are typically bolted to a workbench and have a large, heavy body. They are ideal for general workshop use and can handle significant clamping forces. - Swivel Base Bench Vices
Allow the vise to be rotated, offering more flexibility. - Pipe Vices
Designed with serrated jaws specifically for gripping pipes. - Machine Vices
Often used on drill presses or milling machines, but can also be used on a workbench for hand tool work. They are typically smaller and more precise than bench vices. - Milling Vices
Designed for higher precision and often have a swivel base. - Table Vices / Hobby Vices / Craft Vices
These are smaller, lighter-duty vices designed for delicate work, crafting, jewelry making, electronics, and model building. They often have rotating jaws or ball joints for precise positioning. - Pin Vices
Tiny vices with a collet chuck, used for holding very small items like drill bits, taps, or needles.
